Is Your Sunscreen Working Against You? A Nurse's Clean SPF Guide

What broad spectrum, UVA, UVB, and that SPF number really mean, why reapplying matters most, plus a clean mineral SPF and an after-sun rescue.

If you buy one skincare product this summer, make it sunscreen. But not all SPF is created equal, and the label is more confusing than it needs to be. Three things determine whether your sunscreen is actually protecting you: broad spectrum coverage, the right SPF number, and how often you reapply. Let's break down each one.

Quick label lesson: that SPF number only measures UVB, the rays that burn. It says nothing about UVA, the rays that age you and stack up damage for years. The word that covers both is broad spectrum, so if your bottle doesn't say it, you're getting half the protection you think you are. And bigger SPF isn't better: SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB, SPF 50 about 98%. One point. Most dermatologists park the sweet spot between 30 and 50, because the number matters far less than the next thing.

The step everyone skips: reapplying

Here's the truth nobody wants to hear: sunscreen wears off. Sweat, water, a towel, even just time, and the shield you put on at 9am is mostly gone by lunch. No SPF on the shelf changes that. So the rule is simple: reapply every two hours you're out, and right after you swim or sweat. The best sunscreen in the world does nothing sitting in your bag. The one you actually reapply is the one that protects you.

Why I reach for mineral, and zinc in particular

Here's where the nurse in me gets picky. Sunscreens fall into two camps. Chemical filters soak into your skin and turn UV into heat. Mineral filters sit on top and physically reflect it away. Mineral is gentler on sensitive, reactive, and pregnant skin, which is why it's my personal pick, but not all minerals are equal, and this is the part worth knowing.

Zinc oxide is the standout. It's the one filter that covers the entire UV range, all of UVB and deep into long-wave UVA, the aging rays most sunscreens miss. A landmark study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology confirmed that microfine zinc oxide protects across the full spectrum and stays photostable, meaning it doesn't break down in sunlight the way many chemical filters do. So while a chemical sunscreen can start degrading on your skin within a couple of hours, zinc keeps working. Non-nano zinc, the kind that sits on the surface instead of being absorbed, gives you that protection cleanly.

Two clean picks worth reaching for

No guessing required. Two AwearMarket favorites, one for protection, one for the after.

Glimmer Goddess Organic SPF 30, for daily mineral protection. Built on non-nano zinc oxide, the mineral filter that delivers true broad spectrum protection, both UVA and UVB, the honest way: reflected right off your skin. Reef-safe, vegan, and loaded with organic oils and antioxidants like red raspberry seed and pomegranate, so it hydrates while it protects. Clean enough that you'll actually want it on every morning, and easy to reapply.

Active Skin Repair, for when the sun wins anyway. Here's one I love from a nurse's standpoint. Its active ingredient is hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the very molecule your own white blood cells make to fight bacteria and heal skin. It's medical-grade, non-toxic, and completely non-stinging, so you can spray it on a sunburn, a bug bite, a rash, or any minor irritation and it goes to work soothing and supporting your skin's natural recovery. Your after-sun backup plan, in a bottle.

Wear the sunscreen

That's the whole thing. No chemistry degree required. Broad spectrum, SPF between 30 and 50, clean enough to reach for daily, and reapplied every couple of hours. AwearMarket was built on that idea: swap the questionable stuff for something better, one product at a time. So this summer, protect the skin you're in. And those chemical filters you've been slathering on without a second thought? Well, as Dave would say: cut it out.
